he first large-scale urban matsuri took place in London’s historic Spitalfields Market in September 2009. Previously Matsuri had taken place in Hyde Park (1991 & 2001) but this was the first time a Japanese community celebration was held in the middle of a thriving modern mixed commercial and residential area. 2009 Japan Matsuri was a vibrant and colourful occasion, which attracted some 35,000 visitors (young and old, Japanese and non-Japanese) and much media coverage including internet blog posts and streamed video.

In 2010, Japan Matsuri extended into Old Spitalfields Market  and attracted 50,000 visitors.

In 2011, Japan Matsutri will take place in The County Hall behind London Eye in September.

THE ORGANISERS

Japan Matsuri is at heart a community project. It is an event where members of the Japanese community in London can celebrate and enjoy food, music and dance with their friends and neighbours of all nationalities, in a similar way to a local festival in Japan. Everyone has a stake in the event: Japanese businesses each provide financial and volunteer support; Japanese traders and restaurants share their wares; Japanese performers young and old, give of their skills.

The organisers’ work is to bring all the various strands together and to provide the vision and the administrative back up to realise the event. The lead is taken by the Japan Matsuri Ltd.in association with Japan Association, Japan Society, Embassy of Japan, Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the UK and Nippon Club.

2009年9月に初めて、大規模な「祭り」が、ロンドンの歴史あるスピタルフィールズ・マーケットにて開催されました。以前、「祭り」は、1991年及び2001年にハイドパークで催されていましたが、2009年のジャパン祭は、現代的で活気ある商業地と住宅街が混在する地域で開催された、初の日本人コミュニティの祭りとなりました。当日は、さまざまな世代や国籍の３万５千人もの方々にご来場いただき、躍動感あふれる華やかなイベントとなりました。メディアの反響も大きく、イベントの様子は多くのインターネットやブログ、ビデオなどを通して伝えられました。

2010年のジャパン祭はオールド・スピタルフィールズ・マーケットで開催され、5万人の方々を誘致しました。

2011年のジャパン祭は、ロンドン・アイの側にあるカウンティー・ホールで9月に開催されます。今年の祭はより大規模に、より良いものになることでしょう！是非、足を運び参加してください。

ジャパン祭は、コミュニティに根ざすプロジェクトです。ロンドンの日本人コミュニティの方々が、日本のお祭りと同じように、食べ物や音楽、踊りなどを多国籍の友人や隣人と祝い楽しめるイベントです。この全員参加型のイベントでは、各在英日本企業に寄付やボランティアという形でご支援いただき、日本レストランや他様々なジャンルのトレーダーやパフォーマーに出店、ご参加いただきました。

主催者に求められていたのは、多種多様な参加者の視点を理解、考慮し、その上で揺ぎ無いひとつのビジョンを構成し、イベント成功のための現実的プランを作成することでした。英国日本人会、日本協会、日本大使館、在英日本商工会議所、日本クラブにご協力をいただきながら、ジャパン祭り会社主催で開催されます。
